City and Borough of Sitka
City Metals and Glass Recycling Center
The City and Borough of Sitka converted one of the clarifier tanks of the old pulp mill into a recycled materials recovery facility (MRF). A portion of the facility is subleased to the City's off island waste disposal contractor, Allied Waste Industries dba Rabanco Corporation. Rabanco has a local subcontractor, Straiger Sanitation who brings in truckloads of recycled materials such as mixed paper, cardboard, glass, tin cans, aluminum. These materials are compacted into bales and these bales are stored in a 40-foot van, which when full, is shipped to the Rabanco facility in Washington. The recycling center also accepts junk cars, aluminum pieces, old skiffs, and industrial scrap which are all crushed and baled for shipment down south. Household hazardous waste such such antifreeze, batteries, cleaning agents, diesel fuel, fertilizers, gas, paint, solvent, thinners and used oils can also be disposed at the site.
The Sitka Police Department (SPD) is subleasing 11,500 square feet of the facility which serves as a vehicle and boat impound yard. It is a fenced and secured area adjacent to the car bailer which makes a more efficient operation to dispose of cars that have been evaluated as derelict under the City statute.
