Fortress of the Bear
Fortress of the Bear is a nonprofit corporation created to provide a humane home for nuisance bears and to provide an educational experience for local residents and tourists. They are currently leasing the two clarifier tanks of the former pulp mill, covering an area of 107,220 square feet.
In summer 2007, the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game issued them a permit to house and display brown bears and shortly thereafter, they acquired two recently orphaned bear cubs named Killisnoo and Chaik. Their long range program includes plans for a museum/interpretive center, classrooms and research facility. Fortress is now open to the public.
